Critics argue that if we are serious about tackling the substance-abuse problem in Britain, we are going to have to start considering new models of rehabilitation.  These new paradigms will represent a real cultural shift; they should be long-term at heart, and grounded in the supportive, inclusive and revitalising networks of family and community.  They should extend beyond the medical, and take into account the complex behavioural, psychological and social forces at the centre of addiction.  Abstinence or sobriety should no longer be the benchmark of an individual’s recovery; instead these new models must include the provision of life, social and educational skills, and lead to successful, self-directed reintegration and active engagement with society at large.

This sustained, long-term recovery model should foster a sense of purpose, participation and active citizenship, and will rely heavily on the very communities it will eventually enhance.  But in an age of public spending cuts and concerted belt-tightening, do we have the means or inclination to provide such long-term and resource-intensive solutions?

Join a panel of experts and practitioners as they assess the possibilities for rehabilitation, integration, and participatory citizenship at the heart of the new ‘recovery models’ for substance-users.
